I think it’s time to give you folks a little tour of the main floor of our home. Like most decorators, my first client was myself. I knew that I loved decorating ever since my husband and I moved into our first apartment together. I have to say though, now that I am working with a variety of clients, I love the challenge of working with other styles and tastes. There’s nothing like the thrill of helping people make their house into a home.
I had some beautiful photos taken by Amy Symes a few months ago, right after we had our home painted. Our home isn’t finished by any means, but I kind of like it that way. It’s fun to tweak it as our needs evolve and our budget allows. Every change or update makes me fall in love with our home all over again.
We bought this place almost five years ago and I had a blast choosing all the finishes and making sure the home flowed from room to room. I’ve told you about our shower curtain and how it was the inspiration for our colour scheme. Another big inspiration was the set of Denby dishes that we received as wedding presents. We only have this one set of dishes and we use them every day. They were one of the reasons I wanted all glass cabinets in the kitchen – I wanted to show them off! I love the deep navy of the dishes and I incorporated it into our backsplash and the tile for the front hall, powder room and mudroom, as well as the paint colour in the dining room and master bedroom. As you can see, repetition is key to creating a put-together look.
Our gallery walls are my favourite accent by far. They are fantastic for open concept spaces and are a great way to personalize your space. I love mixing art with family photos in different styled frames. They not only look more relaxed, but it also enables you to add to the wall without too much trouble. Do you have a gallery wall in your home? If so, what is the most unique item you have hung up? My favourite is the family portrait I had commissioned from Mandy Cave for our 10th anniversary!
