I don’t know about you, but I like having something a little unexpected and unique in my home. Following are 5 ways to get that extra WOW factor in your home.
That was the case with one of my most recent completed projects. This lovely couple had a beautiful home, but they felt there was something missing. When you first walked in the front door, there was nothing to stop your eye from going right to the back of their house. My solution was to add a console table and a coordinating buffet lamp to the front hall, and to lower their existing art. All this creates a nice vignette when you first enter the home. An added bonus is that it also gives them a landing pad to drop their keys and mail. Adding a lamp by the front door is one of my favourite tricks. It extends your living space in the evening while keeping the lighting cozy and inviting.
Sectionals are funny. They are something that a lot of people want but they’re not quite sure why they want it. I love a good sectional but they are certainly not the best solution for the majority of spaces.
Since I always look at function first, my preference is to place them in casual rooms that only family and close friends will be using. They are perfect for movie night!
It’s important to ensure that traffic in and out of the room is not impeded, and you have to be able to get into the sectional easily. If it’s going into a basement, it’s best to measure all the pieces diagonally to make sure they fit down the stairs. It’s not fun to find that out the hard way!
One of my favourite things in our home is the gallery wall in our dining room. It certainly gets a lot of attention! When we moved into our new home 5 years ago (that flew by!) we had a fair amount of framed art that we had collected from a variety of sources. I loved the idea of grouping it all together to balance out our space and showcase some great family shots.
Our dining room sits across from our open concept kitchen that boasts all glass uppers and a fairly busy glass tile backsplash. I don’t recommend accent walls often, but in this case it works. We needed to create a heavy background for all the different frames to sit on.
We finally put away our tree and all the accompanying decorations, and now I’m looking around our home and feeling like I need to add some life to it. Bring on the plants! Now, anyone who knows me, knows that I do not have a green thumb. However, friends of ours gave us a money tree when we moved in 5 years ago, and somehow it is magically thriving. I love what it adds to our home and I’m ready for more! A bonus is that plants also increase the air quality in the home, which is very important when the windows are shut for months on end.
I am sitting here, recovering from eating way too many cookies, listening to the boys playing nicely together (this is a treat!) and thinking about what my goals are for this new year. I’ve had some time to reflect on where I want to go professionally and personally and I would like to put it in writing to keep me on track. I’m a huge believer in putting things out into the universe – so here it goes!
