Etsy: Made in Canada – Ottawa

I went to the Etsy: Made in Canada show last Saturday and I was blown away by the quality of the hand made goods! I was in designer heaven! I went with a dear friend, her daughter and her mom. We spent most of the time apart though as I couldn’t help but chat with the artists.

Following are the booths I happened to be most drawn to, but after looking at the curated list of all the vendors I know I missed a lot. I can’t wait to add a bunch of items to my wish list!

The day our sofa collapsed

So, yes, that happened. My dear brother sat on our sofa and crack! I wasn’t really too upset. I think I may have smiled a bit when it happened, after I found out said brother was okay of course. That sofa didn’t owe us anything. It was inexpensive and it “lasted” about 8 years. That being said, we weren’t quite ready to invest in a quality piece… so we got out a few stacks of paper and voila! Sometimes quality is worth the wait. I wanted our next sofa to last us a long time. It’s the only sofa in our house, so it needs to be a work horse.

What is a master plan?

Lately I’ve been creating a lot of plans for my clients. I love it! I ask a lot of questions about lifestyle and tastes at the beginning of any job and I love seeing it all come to fruition in a master plan. Having a plan enables us to nail down how you would like the space to feel, and each piece we bring in works towards that goal. For my graphic design buddies reading this, it’s the equivalent of branding your home.

What does a master plan include, you may ask? It depends on how in-depth you would like me to go, but it always includes a 3D floor plan. This floor plan will include furniture placement with real pieces, ideas for window coverings, paint colours, fabric selection for upholstery items and drapery (if applicable), flooring suggestions and art arrangement ideas. I can bring real costs for these items as well, so you will have an idea of where to begin based on your budget.

If you are building a new home, a master plan can include the finishes for the entire house, ensuring that the house flows from one room to the next. At this time a colour scheme can be established, which helps relate the finishes to the items that will eventually reside in the rooms.

10 great reasons to hire a decorator!

With the slight chill in the air this morning I feel like fall is just around the corner. Fall is my absolute favourite season! I love having the windows open to let the fresh air in, not to mention all the comfort food. Stews and curries here I come! I find I always want to nest this time of year too and start thinking of all the projects I want to get done. If you get the same feeling, do me a big favour and ask yourself this question: Do I need to hire a decorator?

I think this is a question everyone should ask when starting a project in their home, whether it be large or small. We all get overwhelmed with all the choices out there and a decorator helps you tie everything together. We can help you invest wisely in your space and work out a plan of action on where to start.

One of the biggest myths about decorating is that a decorator will cost more money than if you did it on your own. Decorators in truth can help save you money in the long run. There are so many times where I’ve been called into a client’s home and they have just purchased furniture that is much too large for the space, or it simply doesn’t work with the style of their house. Now they are stuck with trying to make it work, but eventually they end up replacing it sooner than they would have otherwise.

My five favs: Accent chairs

This is the first of many “My five favs” posts. I see so many beautiful pieces of furniture and accent pieces on a daily basis, and I thought why not share them with you here? Following are my current five fav accent chairs that I am dying to use in the right room for the right client. I had a hard time narrowing it down to five, so I’m sure another post about accent chairs will pop up in the future.

There is nothing like a great accent chair to pull a room together and give it some personality. They come in all shapes and sizes, but the most important thing is to make sure the chair suits the style of the room. Whether it will be used only occasionally to sit by the fireplace while entertaining, or more often to read or watch television, this is definitely where you can have fun with shape, pattern and texture.

My shower curtain is my decorator!

I know, ridiculous title. I’m serious, though. I don’t buy anything unless I run it by my shower curtain. When we bought our house a few years ago, I had the opportunity to choose all of our finishes and the budget to buy some new pieces. I fell in love with this shower curtain! I used to joke with hubby that I don’t need fancy jewelry, just buy me my nice shower curtain. What I loved about it is that it contained all of the colours I wanted to bring into our home. I had to have it!
