My love of decorating began at an early age. I redecorated my bedroom (over and over again) throughout my childhood. I sketched floor plans and pasted clippings from the Sears catalogue all over my journals. I loved how changing my room would force me to look at my possessions and decide which items made me happiest. Full disclosure – that did include kitten posters and an extensive dog statue collection.
One of my favourite things in our home is the gallery wall in our dining room. It certainly gets a lot of attention! When we moved into our new home 5 years ago (that flew by!) we had a fair amount of framed art that we had collected from a variety of sources. I loved the idea of grouping it all together to balance out our space and showcase some great family shots.
Our dining room sits across from our open concept kitchen that boasts all glass uppers and a fairly busy glass tile backsplash. I don’t recommend accent walls often, but in this case it works. We needed to create a heavy background for all the different frames to sit on.
We finally put away our tree and all the accompanying decorations, and now I’m looking around our home and feeling like I need to add some life to it. Bring on the plants! Now, anyone who knows me, knows that I do not have a green thumb. However, friends of ours gave us a money tree when we moved in 5 years ago, and somehow it is magically thriving. I love what it adds to our home and I’m ready for more! A bonus is that plants also increase the air quality in the home, which is very important when the windows are shut for months on end.
I love this time of year! I find myself staying up later because our living room is so cozy. We keep things fairly simple around here. We have a nice tree we take out every year and we deck it out with memory-filled ornaments. It’s not a designer tree by any means but I love seeing the kids (husband included), discover their favourite ornaments every year.
I think it’s time to give you folks a little tour of the main floor of our home. Like most decorators, my first client was myself. I knew that I loved decorating ever since my husband and I moved into our first apartment together. I have to say though, now that I am working with a variety of clients, I love the challenge of working with other styles and tastes. There’s nothing like the thrill of helping people make their house into a home.
I had some beautiful photos taken by Amy Symes a few months ago, right after we had our home painted. Our home isn’t finished by any means, but I kind of like it that way. It’s fun to tweak it as our needs evolve and our budget allows. Every change or update makes me fall in love with our home all over again.
