Art Inspired Small Space – Before and After

Carol contacted because she wanted to get a head start in decorating her new apartment. It wasn’t going to be ready for a year. She was excited to be downsizing, but also a little anxious. Carol really wanted her space to be cozy, personalized and functional and didn’t know where to start.

During our consultation I discovered that she is a fantastic artist, and I was inspired by all the colours and textures in her original art and photography.

As you can see from the before picture of the model unit of her apartment, we had a clean slate to work with. My goal was to give a neutral, yet texture-filled backdrop for a gallery wall of all of her favourite pieces. I also wanted to maximize every inch in her space by using some clever storage solutions.

After doing a floor plan, I determined what pieces were needed to create a cozy conversation area that also served as a place for knitting and television viewing.

To sectional or not to sectional

Sectionals are funny. They are something that a lot of people want but they’re not quite sure why they want it. I love a good sectional but they are certainly not the best solution for the majority of spaces.

Since I always look at function first, my preference is to place them in casual rooms that only family and close friends will be using. They are perfect for movie night!

It’s important to ensure that traffic in and out of the room is not impeded, and you have to be able to get into the sectional easily. If it’s going into a basement, it’s best to measure all the pieces diagonally to make sure they fit down the stairs. It’s not fun to find that out the hard way!

Five things I love about our new sofa!

We’ve been wanting to invest in a nice quality sofa for years and when our placeholder sofa bit the dust, the time was right. It really elevates the room and I can see now why everyone (myself included) recommends getting the best quality sofa you can afford.

The day our sofa collapsed

So, yes, that happened. My dear brother sat on our sofa and crack! I wasn’t really too upset. I think I may have smiled a bit when it happened, after I found out said brother was okay of course. That sofa didn’t owe us anything. It was inexpensive and it “lasted” about 8 years. That being said, we weren’t quite ready to invest in a quality piece… so we got out a few stacks of paper and voila! Sometimes quality is worth the wait. I wanted our next sofa to last us a long time. It’s the only sofa in our house, so it needs to be a work horse.
